The Series Wiretap is connected to only one side of the telephone line and used almost exclusively for residential wiretapping. The Series Wiretap will not work while the telephone is on-hook because there is not flow of current. However, when the phone goes off-hook current flows through the Series Wiretap, thereby activating the device. The Series Wiretap will usually have a small RF transmitter packaged into the tap.

The Series Wiretap is very easy to detect because the device puts additional resistance on the phone line, which reduces the amount of current flow. To detect this type of wiretap the TSCM professional must be able to test other nearby telephone lines for comparisons.
