A bug detector is a piece of electronic equipment designed to detect radio transmitting eavesdropping bugs located in a very close proximity, typically four feet or less. However an eavesdropper taking the time to run wire between a microphone and the radio transmitter, will rarely, if ever, be detected by a bug detector. A bug detector may perform an adequate job of detecting a body mic transmitter or a quick plant bugging device, but that will depend on the operating frequency of the transmitter and the quality and bandwidth detection range of the bug detector. Also, Bug detectors are not useful for wiretap detection.
